Check height, materials and location
Fence permit exemptions depend on more than the overall height. Street proximity, corner locations and whether the fence is masonry, concrete or another material can affect the requirements. A fence associated with a pool barrier needs separate consideration. Send a plan and elevation before assuming the work is exempt.
Street corners and front boundaries
Show the property’s street frontages, the fence alignment, gate openings, heights above adjoining ground and any retaining wall. Corner properties need particular attention to visibility requirements. The proposed fence may also be affected by planning controls, existing permit conditions or heritage requirements.
How VBS can assist
We review the proposed work and site information, assess a building permit application where required and identify the necessary supporting documents. If a permit is issued, the mandatory inspection requirements and completion documents will be set out for the project.
What to send for a fee proposal
Provide the address, title and plan of subdivision, site plan, fence elevations and dimensions. Tell us the proposed materials, maximum heights, post or pier spacing, gate sizes and footing details. Include structural engineering where available, photos and any planning approval or council correspondence.
Keep the approval pathways clear
A building permit does not replace any planning permission, road-related consent or other approval that applies. Boundary ownership or neighbour agreements are separate from building approval. If a retaining wall supports the fence, show both structures and their ground levels in the application.
Frequently asked questions
Can I build a 2-metre front fence without a permit?
Do not rely on a general side or rear fence height rule for a street-facing fence. Location, materials and corner conditions affect the exemption assessment.
Do masonry fences need engineering?
Footings, piers, wall dimensions, wind loads and gate loads can require structural design information. Send the proposed details so the application requirements can be confirmed.
What if the front fence forms part of a pool barrier?
Tell us at the first enquiry. Pool and spa safety barriers have specific approval and safety requirements and should not be assessed as an ordinary boundary fence.
